Brief Action Planning FAQs

Brief Action Planning provides students with the opportunity to identify and explore a change that they would like to make to improve their health and wellness. For example, this change could be in the area of:

  • Sleep
  • Physical Activity (i.e. different ways and strategies to incorporate activity into your routine)
  • Balance (i.e. finding balance between school, personal, and other areas)
  • Social Connections (i.e. strategies and opportunities to meet new people)

Brief Action Planning consists of a 15 minute appointment with a member of the Health Promotion Team at Student Wellness Services. During this appointment, staff work collaboratively with students to set a goal, identify barriers, and create an action plan with solutions for overcoming barriers and concrete steps for achieving the goal. As the appointments are brief, they are meant to focus on one specific goal that the student has.

Brief Action Planning can increase motivation, improve personal and educational performance, increase confidence in achieving goals, and support students in developing self-management skills.

Brief Action Planning appointments are open to all current UCalgary Students who are interested in taking steps to improve an area of their health and wellness.

While aspects of mental health as it relates to health and wellness goals may be discussed in a Brief Action Planning appointment, it is not intended to provide or be a substitute for mental health support or counseling. These appointments are very brief (15 minutes) and focus specifically on a health and wellness related goal. In addition, appointments are with members of our Health Promotion Team, not our counselling and student support team.

While Brief Action Planning is not designed to be a long term support, we do recognize that students could experience challenges or unanticipated barriers to reaching their goal. In these cases, it can be helpful for students to book another 15 minute appointment to re-visit and modify their action plan. Staff can also provide information about additional resources that can be utilized to help the student reach their goals and provide ongoing support, if needed.
