1. Degrees and Specializations Offered

Three options are available for students entering the Master of Engineering (course-based) program:

The MEng program may be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.

This is a distance-delivery program with courses offered online only.

5. Program/Course Requirements

In addition to Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Schulich School of Engineering minimum requirements, the Department requires:

Master of Engineering (course-based)

30 units, of which 12 units may be taken from outside of the Department, and no more than 12 units can be senior undergraduate courses (500-level).

Master of Engineering

a) 18 units of required courses:

b) 12 units chosen from the following list of courses.  If students are interested in combining their courses around a specific theme within the field, please refer to website for course selection guidance.
The lists above are provided as a reference. At the discretion of the Graduate Program Director, additional courses may be approved for Master of Engineering (course-based). Please be advised that not all of these courses may be offered in any one semester. For more information about approved courses, contact [email protected].

Master of Engineering with an Interdisciplinary Specialization

Students wishing to complete a Master of Engineering (course-based) with an Interdisciplinary Specialization must complete a minimum of 30 units of coursework.

a) 18 units of required courses:

Pipeline Engineering Specialization

Students wishing to complete the Pipeline Engineering Specialization must complete 18 units of pipeline engineering approved courses, and an additional 12 units of graduate or senior undergraduate engineering courses.

Pipeline Engineering Approved Courses:
This list is provided as a reference. At the discretion of the Graduate Program Director and the Director of the Pipeline Engineering Centre (PEC), additional courses may be approved for the pipeline engineering specialization. Please be advised that not all of these courses may be offered in any one semester. For more information about approved courses, contact the Graduate Program Advisor at [email protected] (MSc and PhD) or [email protected] (MEng).

Master of Engineering (thesis-based)

a) At least 15 units, of which 6 units may be taken from outside the Department, and no more than 3 units can be a senior undergraduate course (500-level).

b) In addition to the 15 units, students must present at the annual Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student Conference in the Winter Term to receive credit for Mechanical Engineering 613.

Master of Science

a) At least 15 units, of which 6 units may be taken from outside the Department, and no more than 3 units can be a senior undergraduate course (500-level).

b) 3 units must be selected from either Mechanical Engineering 631 or 633.

c) In addition to the 15 units, students must present at the annual Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student Conference in the Winter Term to receive credit for Mechanical Engineering 613.

d) Students wishing to complete the Pipeline Engineering Specialization must complete 9 units of pipeline engineering approved courses (see list above) with a pipeline engineering project.

Doctor of Philosophy

a) For students entering the PhD program with a MSc or equivalent, at least 6 units beyond the Master's degree are required at the graduate level (600-level or higher).

b) For students without a MSc or equivalent, at least 21 units at the graduate level (600-level or higher) are required. Of these courses, 6 units may be taken from outside the Department, no more than 3 units can be a senior undergraduate course (500-level), and three units must be selected from either Mechanical Engineering 631 or 633.

c) In addition to the courses listed in (a) or (b), students must present at the annual Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student Conference before their candidacy exam to receive credit for Mechanical Engineering 713.

d) Following the candidacy exam, students must make one additional presentation at the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student Conference in the Winter Term as partial fulfillment of the degree requirement.

e) Students wishing to complete the Pipeline Engineering Specialization must complete 9 units of pipeline engineering approved courses (see list above) with a pipeline engineering project.

Note: The student's supervisor and the Associate Head (Graduate Studies) must approve all courses taken outside of the department.

Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade)

Students admitted to the Schulich School of Engineering will not be allowed to request the Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade) for any course that is applicable to their degree; or apply any course awarded a grade of CG towards their graduation requirements.

Students may choose the CG grade for a course taken extra to load.

The use of the CG grade will affect students' eligibility for internal awards.

7. Time Limit

8. Supervisory Assignments

MEng (course-based) students in the department do not require a supervisor.

9. Candidacy and Required Examinations

Candidacy

Doctoral students must pass an oral Field of Study examination and an oral defence of the thesis proposal. For complete details of the examination format and other candidacy requirements, see the Candidacy Requirements document available on the Department website.

Thesis Examination

See Engineering Programs. In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Schulich School of Engineering requirements, the program requires:

Scheduling of the Examination
All members of the Supervisory Committee must have reviewed the student’s draft thesis document before an examination can be scheduled.

Composition of the Committee
The Internal Examiner must be external to the home program.
