Funding your education

There are a variety of sources to help cover the costs of attending university. These could include scholarships and bursaries, student loans, savings and income from a part-time job.

Scholarships and Awards

By applying for admission, you’re automatically considered for entrance awards. You should then complete the competitive high school awards application in your Student Centre (my.ucalgary.ca).

Canadian Student Loans

Government student loans and grants are available to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Apply through your home province of residence, or visit canlearn.ca for details.

Types of awards

Automatic awards

$2,000 - $5,000

  • No application required

For example: $5,000 President's Admission Scholarship for students with an admission average of 95% or higher

High school entrance awards

$500 - $10,000

  • Application required
  • Deadline: March 1, 2023
  • 15 minutes to apply

For example: $10,000 CIBC International Entrance Scholarship for an international student who demonstrates strong academic excellence

Prestige awards

Up to $25,000

  • Application required
  • Deadline: Dec. 1, 2022
  • Several hours to apply (essay questions)

For example: $20,000 University of Calgary International Entrance Scholarship, renewable for four years

When and how to apply for awards

You can apply for awards as soon as you've submitted your application for admission. You don't have to wait to be accepted.
