Next Steps to Global Learning
Interested in study, research, or internships abroad?
We’ll give you all the info and support you need to make it happen.
Step 1: Start Here
First things first, watch the Global Learning 101 playlist (20-minute video series) for all the information you need to get started! It covers the benefits of global learning, explains the terminology used to talk about different types of programs, discusses some common myths, and walks you through the application process.
Step 2: Find a Program
The Program Finder allows you to browse the wide range of programs available and filter by options such as your field of study, desired location, language, and more.
Exchange programs
An exchange enables you to spend a summer, semester, or year at one of 200+ partner universities worldwide without paying international student tuition (simply continue to pay your regular University of Calgary tuition). You earn credit toward your degree, including credit for courses that are not offered by the University of Calgary. If you are a full-time, degree-seeking UCalgary student who will be finished at least 10 courses before you go (and have a minimum GPA of 2.5), we've got programs for you. Exchanges allow you to plan your own experience: choose your ideal host universities and courses, and enjoy the freedom to learn and explore the world at your own pace. Group Study Programs
Spend one to six weeks abroad on a faculty-led program; instructors are your experienced guide, coordinator, and teacher on our culturally immersive Group Study Programs. Gain University of Calgary calendared course credits on one of the 30+ programs offered each year and meet new friends in a personal, small class environment. If you are a student who will be finished at least 10 courses before you go (in good academic standing), you are welcome to apply. Many programs are also open to Visiting and Open Studies students. Join an experiential group learning adventure that’s conveniently planned out for you - with new programs offered each year! Review group study application instructions on each program page before applying.
Research or Internship Programs
A research exchange or internship gives you the rare opportunity to build cross-cultural skills in addition to adding valuable experience to your resume and career outlook. If you are a full-time, degree-seeking UCalgary student who will be finished at least 10 courses before you go, we've got programs for you. Research and Internships allow you to plan your own experience – choose your ideal placement and industry or area of research, and enjoy the freedom to learn and explore the world at your own pace. Review the deadlines and "How to Apply" section of each each research or internship program page for more information.
Step 3: Review the Program Page
The program pages provide much information about student experience, academic content, study/travel dates, budgeting, and more. Critical details at the top of each page note the program's location, language of instruction, application status, and deadline to apply.
Some programs may have scheduled Information Sessions that interested applications are encouraged (or may even be required) to attend. If available, this will be noted near the top of the program page.
Finally, near the bottom of each program page, the Global Learning Advisor for each program is identified with a link to their contact details.
Step 4: Meet with a Global Learning Advisor
We strongly recommend meeting with a global learning advisor! Advisors can help narrow down your options, clarify program details, and support you with any questions about your eligibility to apply.
You are welcome to contact the advisor for your desired program directly, or consult the advising page for instructions about drop-in advising and booked appointments.
Step 5: Meet with your Academic Advisor
Your academic advisor will be a huge support as you plan your program!
At this stage, you should be talking to your academic advisor about where you’re at in your degree, when a good time to go abroad would be, and how your preferred program will fit into your studies.
Step 6: Apply for your Program
When the program(s) you're interested in open for applications, you can go ahead and apply! Just make sure that you have consulted the program page for application deadlines and any eligibility requirements you need to be aware of.
Step 7: Finally...
Once you have submitted an application, please keep an eye on your UCalgary email, as this is how you will be contacted with your application results.
The program page may note an expected timeline for when you will receive application results. A couple common things to keep in mind:
- Most programs have a priority deadline and review all applications after the deadline has passed.
- If spots are still available after that, recruitment is on a "first-come-first-considered" basis.
