Are you pursuing your leadership goals, participating in a non-credit service-learning initiative or presenting at a conference not connected to academic credit? The University of Calgary is committed to providing you with an outstanding student experience and helping you grow as a leader, and financial barriers shouldn’t limit your involvement in any of the above.

You can apply to the Student Activities Fund (SAF) to support your co-curricular activities that contribute to your leadership development. The Student Activities Fund is awarded through the Leadership and Student Engagement Office, and is a joint collaboration between the University of Calgary and Students’ Union Quality Money Program. What: Apply for financial support to pursue your leadership development and professional goals

Who: All students  

Award: Within a single twelve-month time period, students will be awarded funding only once. The maximum amount students are eligible for in that time period is $500.

For example, if a student applies in May 2019 for an activity that will take place in September 2019 and is funded, they will not be eligible to receive SAF funds again until September 2020.

Prior to submitting the application, we strongly encourage you to have all of your activity information ready and be prepared for the following three questions:

  1. Tell us a bit about yourself and articulate what leadership means to you.
  2. Tell us why attending this event would be meaningful to you and describe how you will demonstrate leadership during the experience.
  3. How does this activity relate to your professional development beyond your academic area of study?

Application details

Application Deadline: Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. on the 10th day of each month.*

If successful, you will receive your award the following month.

*Please note, there will be no application submissions in either April or December.

Application Tips: Fund distribution is competitive. Applicants should ensure their application is thorough, goes into depth on each question asked, has been proofread and does not have spelling or grammatical errors. We encourage applicants to review an example of a strong SAF application on this page. It is the responsibility of the applicant to know and adhere to all eligibility requirements.

Application Review: SAF Applications are reviewed by a committee comprised of university staff, faculty and student representatives. Committee membership and SAF application procedures are reviewed annually.
