Asbestos Awareness  This online course is intended to supplement the University's Asbestos Management Plan by providing asbestos awareness training.  This course is designed to provide information to University personnel who work in areas or buildings where asbestos-containing materials are present, as well as University personnel who may not conduct asbestos related work but are interested in learning more about asbestos. 20 minutes Online

Mandatory training for university employees completing work activities that may impact or be adjacent to asbestos-containing material.

Biosafety Program

The Biosafety Program is designed to promote and monitor compliance with acts, regulations, directives, standards and guidelines. 

This course is equivalent to prior versions called Biosafety (Biohazard Handling) Training, Biosafety Laboratory Training, Biosafety (Introduction) Training, and Biosafety 1.

30 minutes Online

Mandatory training for all persons directing or involved in the handling and storage of biohazards for research and teaching purposes.

Optional training for university employees and students who would like to become informed about the biosafety program.

Biosafety Bloodborne Pathogens 

Blood and certain other body fluids may contain microorganisms that cause disease in humans. To minimize the risk of infection, it is important that you know how these bloodborne pathogens are spread, how to avoid exposure and what steps you should take if you are exposed.

Prerequisite: Biosafety (Program) Training

30 minutes Online Mandatory for University employees handling specific bloodborne pathogens or human cell lines, tissues, body fluids and/or other potentially infectious material that may contain bloodborne pathogens. Register here

Control of Hazardous Energy This course is designed to assist workers who perform tasks that require the Control of Hazardous Energy to lock out or isolate equipment, machinery or processes. 60 minutes Online Mandatory for all University workers who complete tasks which require control of hazardous energy for lockout or isolation. Office Ergonomics For employees who use a computer in their daily work activities. Users will learn signs, symptoms, and risk factors of ergonomic injuries as well as strategies to minimize risk and improve overall comfort. 30 minutes Online University workers who work at a desk are required to complete office ergonomics training.  Register here
Industrial Ergonomics

Users will learn signs, symptoms, and risk factors of ergonomic injuries as well as strategies to minimize risk and improve overall comfort.

Formally known as Safe Lifting. 

30 minutes Online Required for employees who complete manual labour tasks as part of their job (lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, and/or awkward positions). Register here
Customized Ergonomics Decrease the risk of injury, improve productivity and reduce absenteeism with Department Ergonomic Optimization.  Proactive services include an assessment to detect ergonomic risk factors, recommendations to assist with employee safety and customized presentations to provide job specific training related to the ergonomic concerns.    In person   Contact the Ergonomic Program Advisor ([email protected]) to book your department/unit training session. 
Field Safety This online training has been developed to assist field research and field school participants and supervisors in preparing for field excursions Hazards exist in every workplace and in remote, isolated or wilderness settings, the hazards may be unfamiliar or more difficult to recognize. Proper preparation and panning are essential for preventing illness and injury in these locations. 4 hours Online

Mandatory for all field participants and supervisors traveling to remote, isolated or wilderness locations as defined in the Field Safety Standard. 

Optional for all university employees and students who would like to become more informed about field safety

Fire Safety Know how to prevent fires and be ready if a fire breaks out. Fire Safety Training teaches common causes of fire in the workplace, hazards to look out for, emergency procedures and how to respond when faced with a fire. You will also learn to recognize the different types of fires and fire extinguishers. 30 minutes Online Recommended training for all university employees.  Register here
Harassment and Violence Awareness The University of Calgary is committed to creating a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment for working and learning. To honour these commitments and in compliance with Alberta legislation, Environment, Health & Safety has developed a mandatory Harassment and Violence Awareness Training course. Enrolment emails are sent to faculty and staff with the link to the course. 45 minutes Online Mandatory training for all University Employees, Supervisors and Managers Register here
Hazard Assessment Hazards exist in every workplace. To prevent illness and injury in the workplace these hazards must be identified, assessed and controlled. Hazard assessment is a process to identify health and safety hazards that are associated with specific tasks that make up a job. It also determines the risks presented by these hazards and detailed methods to control or reduce these risks. 45 minutes Online Mandatory training for all University Employees, Supervisors and Managers Register here
Hearing Conservation The University strives to control excessive noise levels; however, certain locations and/or operations may expose personnel to significant noise levels. This training aims to provide awareness for workers to understand the nature of the noise hazard they are exposed to and how to conserve hearing.   30 minutes Online

Mandatory training for University employees who are exposed to noise at or above an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) of 82 dBA, or 80 dBA TWA for a 12 hour shift, and for employees who work in areas with noise levels at or above 85 dBA. 

Optional training for university employees and students who would like to become informed about hearing conservation.

Incident Reporting and Investigation All work-related accidents, incidents, and occupational illnesses are required to be reported and investigated. Responsibilities for reporting and investigating have been defined for employees, supervisors and managers in the University's Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS).  35 minutes Online Mandatory training for all University supervisors and managers, as well as all employees who participate in conducting incident investigations. Laboratory Safety

Working inside of a laboratory has the potential to expose the worker to a variety of hazardous materials and processes. To minimize the risk of adverse health effects, it is important that workers know; how to identify laboratory hazards, understand the hierarchy of controls and know how to implement the controls and where to find more information on University of Calgary specific procedures.

Prerequisite: WHMIS 2015

Ladder Safety

Portable ladders are one of the handiest, simplest tools that we use. However, careless or improper ladder usage results in many accidents and fatalities each year. This online course has been designed to ensure workers understand the rules of ladder safety and how to use a ladder safely and effectively.

This online course will cover the hazards associated with ladder use, types of ladders, ladder ratings, selecting the correct ladder, setting up your ladder, using ladders safely and the requirements for maintaining, inspecting and storing ladders.

30 minutes Online

Respiratory Protection Many workplaces contain airborne hazards that you may not be able to see or smell. Inhaling these can affect your health. This online course has been designed to ensure that workers learn to recognize airborne hazards and know how to protect themselves. This course will cover information on the types of airborne hazards, how the respiratory system works, respirator types and selection, proper use of a respirator, fit testing, respirator inspection, cleaning and storage, limitations of respirators and employee responsibilities. 30 minutes Online

Mandatory training for university employees where a respirator has been identified for use during work activities. Completion of this course is a prerequisite for respiratory fit testing.*

Spill Response In your workplace you may be required to work with materials that are classified as hazardous. These materials may be dangerous or even deadly. That is why spills, however small, must be taken seriously. To work safely, you must understand how to respond to a spill. By acting quickly and following the correct procedures, you can protect yourself and others and prevent a spill from getting out of control.  45 minutes Online

Transportation of Dangerous Goods The purpose of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) training is to protect the public when dangerous goods are being transported. Volunteer Coordinator OHS Orientation UCalgary is committed to providing, promoting and maintaining a safe work environment. As a part of the University's Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS), responsibilities for health and safety have been defined for Volunteer Coordinators and Volunteers.   30 minutes Online Required training for all university volunteer coordinators. WHMIS 2015

This course covers the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) which is the chemical hazard communication system for workplaces in Canada, which ensures that people have the information they need to work safely with chemicals and hazardous materials. 

WHMIS training is a legislative requirement for all people who work with or around controlled products such as chemicals and biohazardous materials. Canada has aligned the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), and this course will discuss the requirements coming from this alignment. This course provides attendees the information on how this system works in their day to day activities. WHMIS training from organizations other than the University of Calgary is not recognized. 

35 minutes Online Mandatory for those who work with a hazardous product, or who may be exposed to a hazardous product as part of their work activities must learn about the hazard information for these products.  Register here
Workplace Inspections

All employees at the University of Calgary have a shared responsibility for maintaining a safe and healthy work environment. As part of the University's Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS), responsibilities for health and safety have been defined for employees, supervisors and managers.

Formal inspections provide a way to identify and correct potentially hazardous conditions at the workplace. All individuals who conduct inspections need to be trained and familiar with the work areas being inspected.

The purpose of the this training is to inform university employees about the inspection processes at the University of Calgary and how to meet the requirements of the University's OHSMS.

30 minutes Online

Mandatory for all university employees, supervisors and managers conducting inspections.
