About this Program:
This program has been specifically designed for University of Calgary academic staff and focuses on personal effectiveness – how to get the results you need for your career development in a way that is sustainable – so that you can get even better outcomes in the future.
No matter what your career aspirations, “Leading Self” and gaining personal effectiveness comes first. This capacity is developed by increasing self-awareness to effectively manage time, build collaborative relationships and create and renew your personal vision and career goals. Effectiveness in the Academy: Personal Leadership for Enhanced Career Productivity is held multiple times during the year and offered in several formats (six 2.5 hour workshops or a 2 day program).
Effectiveness in the Academy: Personal Leadership for Enhanced Career Productivity focuses on a process that is highly attuned with the realities of academic life. Several leading authors will be cited but the works of Stephen R. Covey (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) will be emphasized. The program is designed for academic staff members who wish to develop or sharpen personal and collegial skills toward a successful and meaningful career. The program is the first segment of the University of Calgary Academic Leadership Track, a continuing professional development pathway for leadership excellence. The session is open to all full-time faculty.
Facilitator:
The lead facilitator of the course is Karen Chown, the Director of Academic Leadership Development & Organizational Effectiveness, who leads the Academic Leadership Academy. Karen has developed and facilitated many leadership development programs at the university and other industries to high acclaim. Also involved in the process will be guest facilitators - senior UCalgary faculty who exemplify personal leadership and effectiveness.
Several of the University of Calgary’s top leaders have utilized the 7 Habits training as an element of their professional development and continue to find it helpful in their work today.
This program has been offered since September 2015 and continues to receive very positive feedback:
Taking the course was a transformative experience. It gave me perspective on professional life, and in fact, on life in general. I use some of the tactics discussed daily.

I came away with a new recognition of what is important to me --- what motivates me to do what I do, how I can contribute to the university and academic communities.
