The City of Calgary's Mental Health and Addictions Strategy
The City of Calgary recently passed Calgary's Mental Health and Addiction Strategy. Along with other stewards and community advocates, representatives from our UCalgary community brought research and applied knowledge of our own caring campus to the conversation.
Some of the focus areas like better coordination of services and improved information sharing are important to our own Campus Mental Health Strategy (CMHS). Check out the below initiatives for our own community, created to build better connection with local services and resources.
Community initiatives
After Hours Support
When Student Wellness Services offices are closed, callers are given the option to connect directly with a Woods Homes crisis counsellor or the Distress Centre. UCalgary students can access them directly or by calling Student Wellness Services 403-210-9355.
Mental Health Consultant
Operating within business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.), our mental health consultant offers a broad range of support for staff, faculty, and post-docs by connecting with mental health resources on and off campus. Access the consultant through Staff Wellness by calling 403-220-2918.
K-12 Transition
UCalgary works with other Calgary post secondary institutions to connect with the K-12 system to better support student transitions into postsecondary life. Some of this work includes working with local school boards to understand the needs of transitioning students and to develop resources to better support that transition.
