First Year Scholars Program

First Year Scholars (FYS) is an interdisciplinary community that provides high-achieving, incoming students with an opportunity to engage in advising appointments, workshops, and events focused on learning and leadership. In this program, students receive tailored support from the Student Success Centre to help them reach their goals at UCalgary and beyond.

The First Year Scholars program is open to students of all faculties who are entering university from high school. Top incoming students will be invited via email to apply in summer 2022.

Who can join First Year Scholars?

FYS is open to students who are: 

  • Entering their first year of undergraduate studies with a high admission average. 

  • Involved in leadership activities and/or volunteerism in the community. 

  • Looking for opportunities to engage with peers across all disciplines. 

  • Dedicated to building their knowledge and skills on topics of learning and leadership. 

  • Committed to enriching their university experience through reflective practice and coaching.

One-on-one Advising

Identify your academic or extra-curricular goals—both within your degree and beyond—with the help of academic development specialists (ADS). Develop academic strategies and familiarize yourself with available resources to better achieve your goals.

Tailored Workshops

Learn how to set your skills and knowledge apart from other students in workshops tailored for the needs of high-achieving students. From crushing your inner critic to applying for academic awards and scholarships, there's something for everyone. Attend workshops focused on leadership and academic skills.

Dedicated Study Space

Need a place to study or hang out? First Year Scholars have access to the exclusive First Year Scholars & Scholars Academy Lounge. The space includes study and presentation spaces and free day-use lockers. Study, eat, and meet others in the program in this dedicated space.

Scholars Academy Mentorship

Wondering how to stand out in your field of studies or navigate your degree? Seek advice from someone who understands what you're going through by connecting with a member of Scholars Academy. First Year Scholars will have the opportunity to attend talks and mentorship sessions from upper-year students who are thriving in their degree programs.

Awards and Scholarships

Gain support in applying to national and international awards and scholarships.

Unique Opportunities

Whether it is a new scholarship, a chance to hone your research and data skills, a fun volunteering event, or an exclusive speaker series, unique social and leadership opportunities arise throughout the year that aid in the personal and professional development of First Year Scholars.
