Employee Tuition Support
All Staff Groups
Eligibility
Eligibility is based on the staff group and appointment type. To verify your eligibility refer to your letter of offer or contact UService. Some temporary employment statuses may mean that you become ineligible (being on an unpaid leave, for example) - please also review the non-eligible section below.
Eligible Staff Members
- Must have a regular, fixed term, or limited term appointment.
- Must complete six (6) months of continuous service in a benefit eligible position. Previous non benefit positions will not count towards the six-month waiting period.
- Must be actively at work on course start date or on the tuition fee deadline date.
Continuing Education Tuition Support
- Eligibility and benefit entitlement are based on the course start date.
- Dependents are not eligible.
Academic Tuition Support
- Staff members must be eligible prior to the start date of the session, but the entitlement is based on the employee's status on the fee deadline.
- Dependents are eligible after the staff member completes one (1) year of continuous service in a benefit eligible position. Previous non-benefit positions will not count towards the one-year waiting period.

- Management and Professional Staff members can share their benefit with spouses and dependent children (read more).

Eligible Staff Members
- Must have a regular, continuing, contingent term or limited term appointment.
- Must continue to hold their appointment during the session in which the tuition support applies.
- Staff members are eligible from the start date of their appointment.
Continuing Education Tuition Support
- Eligibility and benefit entitlement are based on the course start date.
- Dependents are not eligible.
Academic Tuition Support
- Staff members must be eligible on to the start date of the academic session, but the entitlement is based on the staff member’s status on the fee deadline date.
- Dependents are eligible from the staff member’s date of appointment.
Eligible Staff Members
- Must have an associate full-time appointment, or in the case of a part time associate, the benefit will be prorated.
- Must be actively at work on a course start date or on the tuition fee deadline date.
- Full-time Postdoctoral Associates are eligible after completion of six (6) months of full-time continuous service after Jan. 1, 2021. Previous non-benefit eligible positions and service prior to Jan. 1, 2021 will not count towards the six-month waiting period.
Continuing Education Tuition Support
- Eligibility and benefit entitlements are based on the course start date.
- Dependents are not eligible.

Non-Eligible Staff Members
- Staff members that terminate prior to course start date for Continuing Education courses or the fee deadline date for academic credit courses.
- Support Staff and Management & Professional Staff members with an appointment that is recurring part-time, temporary relief, temporary short term, casual, student employees.
- Support Staff and Management & Professional Staff, and Postdoctoral Associate members on a leave without pay, parental leave, long-term disability or sessional lay off.
- Support Staff and Management & Professional Staff, and Postdoctoral Associate members with less than 6 months of service in a benefit-eligible position.
- Academic sessional, clinical and term certain appointments.
Dependents
Dependents must meet the definition of dependent under the University's health care plan. The staff members may be asked to provide evidence, satisfactory to the Board, that a child and/or spouse is a dependent. A child shall be considered a dependent if, during the period for which tuition fee waiver is being sought, such child is included as an eligible dependent on the same Alberta Health Care registration as the staff member.
The spouse or dependent child must satisfy all academic and registration requirements and also pay such other general compulsory fees as normally assessable to students.
Each eligible dependent is eligible to receive the applicable maximum tuition support benefit amount. The benefit amount cannot be transferred or shared between dependents.
